Farewell Orange and Green!

The day has come for our first puppies to leave the nest.  While it is a sad day, in many ways it is also a happy one.  Both Green and Orange are now on their ways to their new homes, where they will begin the rest of the adventure we call life.

Orange settled into the back of Barbara's car, ready to go.

Barbara Daley came by early this afternoon to meet all the puppies and make her choice.  She was very pleased with the overall quality of the litter, and had a hard time picking between Orange and Brown.  With her help we assessed Red and Purple, and have decided that Purple is the best girl for us to choose as a keeper.

So now we have three boys and two girls left on the farm.  Purple gets to stay, so Red will still be looking for the perfect home.  Blue is spoken for and will be picked up in a few weeks after spending a bit more time home with his littermates.  Either Brown or Black will be meeting his new person next weekend and making the trip to Quebec where he will live.

It is sad to say goodbye to everyone, but we can't be anything but pleased with how this litter has turned out.  I will continue to post updates of the remaining puppies, and if their new owners send me updates I will share them here for everyone to enjoy.

Oh, and for your entertainment, introducing the PuppyMobile!  This elegant form of transportation is perfect for moving seven curious and independent puppies from their Indoor Puppy Palace to the PlayYard.  The photo was taken on one of their last PuppyMobile rides as a full litter.  Now with five there will be more room (though they will also soon be learning to walk on a leash to get to the yard).

Conformation Photo Time

Despite the incredible muggy heat, we managed to take conformation photos of everyone today.  Because it's hot several puppies insisted on panting so their mouths are wide open in some of the better photos.  However, they did great all things considered.  Please enjoy!

Vet visit and more photos

Today was the puppies' big first vet visit.  Everyone got their 8 wk vaccinations, deworming, and a thorough check-over.  We also microchipped everyone.  The visit went well with all the puppies strong and healthy.  They weighed between 18 and 22 lb.  Interestingly this entire litter now weighs more than Renee's first (uncomplicated) litter did at the SAME age.  Perhaps because Renee nursed them a bit longer than she did her last litter.  Either way, they are far from being a weak litter of puppies.  Instead they are right on target for their age.

On Sunday one of our puppy buyers came by to meet the puppies.  She took a bunch of photos and was kind enough to allow me to share them with you.  The puppies are mostly flopped out in the heat of the day.  We plan to take more formal photos later today (assuming the weather co-operates, we've had a ton of thunderstorms lately).  If all goes well I will try to get them up tomorrow.

On Friday the stud owner, Barbara Daley, will be coming by to choose her pick puppy and bring him home with her.

New Photos

Life sure has been busy around here, not only with the puppies, but with getting ready for the kids to come home for the summer too.  It's been hard to get much time to make posts, so I'm sorry about the lack of updates.  The puppies are all doing really well.  The heat has been challenging, as have all the thunderstorms we've had lately.  It was difficult getting photos of everyone on my own today as the puppies are prone to swarming any person who comes to greet them.  I had to keep moving away from them to get any decent shots.  They love to pull on pant legs and end up underfoot as we try to maneuver around them.  Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the fresh photos.

A Quick Disclaimer

I know I said this earlier, but I think it's really important to say it again.  As interesting and detailed as this puppy personality testing has been, it is NOT a definitive statement of what the puppy will grow up to be like.  A large amount of the puppy's final personality will be influenced by how his or her owner handles, socializes, and trains him/her.  These observations are meant to help you understand what each puppy is like, and see what their potentials may be.  But only time and maturity will give a definitive answer to what their true personality is.

I hope that you have enjoyed.  From these results (and what I know about each puppy), I will do my best to match each puppy with the perfect owner.  The more I know about the potential owners, the better I can match the right puppy to the right person.  As a breeder, each of these guys is like my own baby, and I want only the best for them.  No matter what we will always be there for these puppies and for their new owners.

Last but Not Least, Red!

Our other girl, Red is a fiesty little girl when playing with her siblings.  When the puppies erupt in a tussle we almost always know that Red is somewhere in the middle, instigating the excitement.  Interestingly, the strange environment of the testing really bothered Red, so she showed a lot more shy than her prior behaviour would have indicated.

Social Attraction:  Red was totally unsure of the new locale, and had no confidence at all.  She did finally go to the tester, but really preferred to try to find her known humans.

Following:  Still quite disturbed by everything, Red wasn't at all interested in following the tester.  She did eventually give it a try, but was so hesitant and unsure of herself it was barely enough to call following.

Restraint:  Red didn't struggle when restrained on her back, but she was clearly unhappy, avoiding eye contact and completely passive about it.

Social Dominance:  After all the stress of restraint Red wasn't terribly interested in going to the handler, however she lay quietly and clearly was enjoying being patted.

Elevation:  Like all the others, Red could care less about being picked up.

Retrieving:  Now that she was a bit more relaxed (after all the patting in the Social Dominance test) Red was relaxed enough to be quite interested in the paper ball.  She did chase after it, bumping it, then standing over it, not sure where it had gone to.

Touch Sensitivity:  Red is moderately sensitive.

Sound Sensitivity:  The noise startled Red, but she wasn't particularly upset by it.  On the other hand she also had no real interest in going to find the source either.

Sight Sensitivity:  For the first time Red started to show her usual playful nature.  The dragged toy was quite exciting and she eagerly chased and pounced on it.

Stability:  By this point Red was feeling confident, and though the umbrella startled her, she was eager to check it out, even trying to bite it and move it around.

Cat in a Box:  The cat was clearly interesting, but Red wasn't too terribly excited.  She investigated for a fair while, then lost interest and went her own way.

What does this mean?

The new environment was clearly a big concern for Red, she did eventually settle, but it took a while for her to regain her confidence.  Red isn't overly attached to her person despite her lack of confidence (unlike Brown), which means that it may be more difficult to calm her when under stress.  On the other hand if she is very well socialized she will learn to have confidence on her own and not necessarily need to rely on her owner to give her that confidence.  With good, positive training Red has some potential to enjoy dog sports such as lure coursing.  She really perked up when given the chance to play, and had a reasonable play/prey drive.  If socialized around cats and small animals Red will likely be fine with them, however her higher prey drive could make her more likely to chase should an animal run.  With intelligent and patient handling, Red should develop into a confident and happy girl, but she would not do well with someone who was rough or abusive.  Without good socialization Red would likely have difficulties in new or unusual situations.
